The city of Raleigh is named after Sir Walter Raleigh, who established the lost Roanoke Colony . Raleigh is the second most populous city in North Carolina, after Charlotte. It is also one of the fastest- growing cities in the U.S. Raleigh is known as the “City of Oaks” for its many oak trees, which line the streets in the heart of the city.
Raleigh is in the northeast central region of North Carolina, where the North American Rolling hill-lands (the Piedmont) and Coastal Plain meet. Raleigh is one of the ‘fall line’ cities, the rivers and creeks all typically having waterfalls in their courses. No navigation is possible above the fall line, but the water falling in the rivers was a useful source of power, for example to power grist mills.
Raleigh was founded just after the American Revolution. It is one of the earliest American examples of a planned city, something that was to become common as new states were created in the 19th century. Raleigh was chosen as the site for the state capital in 1788 and laid out in a grid pattern
