would become a tourist attraction. Although the railroad reached Jefferson
City, it was never a place that attracted
large amounts of industry, and as a result it grew slowly as a center of government, with government offices, and some fine mansions of those who wanted to be close to the seat of government. Jefferson City is not served by an Interstate highway even today.
The lack of growth has meant that the city has always been small. As the picture from 1933 shows, it was a Capitol surrounded mainly by poor quality homes. In recent years, however, some vision on redevelopment has seen the downtown area get a makeover that brings out the best of the heritage and makes the city feel unusually relaxed and spacious.
