Athens: the largest city
Athens was the largest city in ancient Greece. About 300,000 people lived there. Many of the people were free but some were slaves. Greek cities were ruled by kings but then Athens became different. The people began to rule the city. Each free man had
a vote and could cast his vote to decide what was to be done. This way of ruling people is called democracy.
Did you know... ?
• There were gold, silver and lead mines around Athens.
• There were marble quarries, too. • Many people in Athens became
rich by trading gold, silver, lead and marble for other goods such as food.
