Greek ships
In ancient Greek times people sailed in ships called galleys. A galley had a sail to help the wind blow it along. It also had oars.
Inside a galley sat rows of slaves. Each slave held a long oar. When the slaves rowed together, they could make the galley move forwards very quickly.
