Today we think of a hero as somebody who does something dangerous to help somebody else. But Greek heroes were not at all like this – although they had great courage and strength, and were favoured by the gods, they were a pretty selfish bunch.
The story of Jason and the Argonauts is a classic myth that was written by Apollonius of Rhodes in the third century BC. He was not the first to tell the story, but his version is the best known today (see page 24).
G 3 This is the famous theatre at Epidauros. It was part of a temple sanctuary. It could hold 14,000 people. The seats in the lower part are more roomy while the upper section has smaller seats (the cheap seats). As a result, the top half is slightly steeper than the bottom.
