  DAILY LIFE
 Married life
A girl would be married off by her parents in an arranged marriage at about 15 years of age. She would be taken to her husband’s house in a chariot which would then be broken up as a sign that she could never go home again. After this the wife would rarely go out of the home and she always did what her husband said. But she did have complete control over the household and the slaves.
 4 Clothing styles.
F 5 The ancient Greeks wore many fashionable
hairstyles. This sculpture shows a man with
short, wavy hair combed down
over the forehead. Wealthy women wore long hair set in braids. They also
had pony tails and held their hair in
place with ribbons wound around the head.
Otherwise the hair was set in place using scented
waxes. Ancient Greeks did not have fair hair,
but thought that it was an attractive feature, so they tried
bleaching their hair.
A chiton was made of a square of cloth, held in place by brooches and pins at the shoulders and a belt round the waist.
A chlamys was a square of wool worn by men and pinned over the right shoulder. It might be worn with a short chiton and by young men with no other clothing.
