G The god Zeus with his thunderbolt.
G Athena fighting a giant.
The Greeks thought that the world around them was controlled by super-humans. The most important were the 12 Olympian gods.
Like all other civilisations, the ancient Greeks wanted to know about creation and life after death. They believed that the world was formed and controlled by a range of gods, each of which was responsible for one aspect of the world.
Creation
The ancient Greeks imagined the world began as a result of the god Chaos. Chaos was the dark, silent depths filled with formless matter from which all things came into existence. The Greeks knew it as the cosmos. Chaos generated the solid mass of Earth, from which arose the starry, cloud-filled Heaven.
Mother Earth (Gaea) bore a son, Uranus, without help. She and her son Uranus were the parents of the first creatures, the Titans. Uranus hated these monsters, and, even though they were his children, he locked them in a secret place in the earth. Gaea was enraged at this and arranged for their release. The Titans were then responsible for many of the natural disasters that occurred, such as volcanic eruptions and lightning flashes.
Eventually the Titans were overthrown by their own children, now known as the olympians, led by Zeus. The Olympians were the gods the ancient Greeks worshipped.
