         Using the crane to manipulate equipment during construction.
As evidence of the cooperation, one of the most vital pieces of equipment is the remote manipulator system (RMS) (see also page 47). It is the workhorse “crane” of the ISS, able to manipulate modules and other gear into position. It was built in Canada. One robotic arm has been the responsibility of
the European Space Agency (ESA). It is designed to help with maintenance on the Russian segment of the station. Then there is a Japanese robotic arm attached to the Japanese laboratory module. It is designed to help with exterior experiments and is mounted on a “back porch” of the lab.
