 The Space Shuttle orbiter is designed to carry up to seven astronauts. In a Space Shuttle the acceleration on takeoff is about 3 g, less than that suffered by previous astronauts and so less
of a hazard to the body. In the diagrams right you can see the enormous cargo bay.

Altitude control rockets operate through tiny holes in the nose. They allow the astronauts to point the orbiter in any direction.
