Using silica to predict eruptions
All lavas are silicates. They are the source of the world’s sandstones, clays and other rocks and materials. But volcanic eruptions can produce great danger for people living quite close to them, and any way of predicting the nature of the next explosion will help to save lives. One of the most promising developments of recent years has been in the investigation of the chemistry of lavas, especially the amount of silica they contain.
