Sunspot
Sunspot
An area seen as a dark spot on the photosphere of the Sun. It is a region of slightly cooler gas.
Superior planets
The planets Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are called superior planets because their orbits are farther from the Sun than Earth’s orbit.
Supernova
A violent explosion that occurs at the end of the life of some stars. When it explodes, the star may, for a brief time of a few weeks, be a billion times brighter than the Sun.
Surveyor
A series of NASA probes that landed on the Moon between 1966 and 1968 to gather information before the Apollo project began.
T
Titan
The largest moon of Saturn and the second largest moon in the Solar System (see: Moons). It is 5,150km across and is the only moon to have an atmosphere. Titan’s atmosphere is made mainly of nitrogen.
Supernova—Red dust surrounding these star clusters was probably created by supernovae explosions. Top left is a red supernova remnant, N57D.
