Corona
Corona
The very hot gas (at about two million °C) that stretches out from the surface of the Sun in the form of plumes and loops. Material flowing out into space from the corona makes the solar wind.
The corona varies with sunspot activity.
The corona cannot be seen from the surface of the Earth except when the main disk of the Sun is blocked out during a total eclipse. At these times the corona
can be seen as a white flare around the solar disk. (See also: Diamond ring and Filament.)
Corona/Diamond ring—This is the view that can be seen near the Sun and just at the end of the solar eclipse.
Cosmic rays
Any particles traveling through space at close to the speed of light.
Cosmos
Another term for the Universe.
Crab Nebula
The remnant of a supernova about 7,000 light-years away. It is in the constellation of Taurus. The Crab Nebula is the remains of a star that was seen to explode in 1054 a.d.
Crab Nebula—At the center of this spectacular nebula is the Crab Pulsar—the collapsed core of an exploded star. The Crab Pulsar is a rapidly rotating neutron star about 10km across but containing more mass than the Sun. The green, yellow, and red colors around the edge are remnants of the star that were sent into space with the explosion.
The inset photo shows a Hubble Space Telescope image of the inner parts of the Crab.
