Waterfall
A place where flowing river water falls nearly vertically. Waterfalls are sometimes called cataracts if the fall contains very large amounts of water (for example, the Nile River cataracts). A waterfall with a small vertical drop, a series of small vertical drops, or a steep slope rather than a drop may be called
a cascade. When water is running down a very steep slope, but there are no obvious drops, then the term rapids is used. (See also: Fall line.)
The world’s highest waterfall is Angel Falls in Venezuela, with a fall of some 980m. The largest waterfall by volume is the Khone Falls on
the Mekong River in Laos, which carries nearly 12,000 cu m of water per second over a fall of 70m.
Waterfalls have many characteristic features. Because
the water falls from a great height and contains stones, it can erode the bed at the bottom of the falls. This erosion is marked by a deep pool called a plunge pool. If plunge pools grow and the rock forming the fall is undermined, then the waterfall may retreat, its earlier position being marked by a gorge.
 Waterfall— Many waterfalls occur where a hard cap rock is found along the course of a river.
