Percussion instruments – Drums are an obvious form of percussion, but pianos also use percussion – they work by
striking a string sharply with a hammer.
Tom-toms: the main drums. They are relatively small drums and so vibrate when they are struck to produce a high note. The skin is pulled tight
so that it comes to rest quickly after being struck. This makes short notes that can be played rapidly.
Floor tom
Bass drum: This drum makes a deeper, more booming, and longer-lasting sound. That is because it vibrates more slowly than the other, smaller drums.
Cymbal: This single cymbal is struck with the drumstick.
Hi-hat: A pair of cymbals that are moved up and down on a rod. The hi-hat is worked from a lever on the floor.
Snare drum: A drum with a set of wires placed on the drum skin. It makes a more rattling sound when played.
4 – String makes the sound when it vibrates.
3 – Hammer strikes the string and causes the vibration.
5 – Damper stops the string vibrating when the key is released.
2 – The lever attached to the key lifts the jack, which flicks the hammer.
An Indonesian gamelan is a percussion instrument.
1 – Key is pressed by the finger.
