Cone
Cone
The part of a loudspeaker that moves the air. Cones can be made of paper, plastics and newer materials such as Kevlar.
Cone also refers to the receptor cells in the eye that help us see
in colour (see: Colour vision and Vision).
Contact lenses
Thin lenses worn on the surface
of the eye to correct for defects
of vision. The first contact lens
was made by Adolf Fick in
1887. The modern contact lens, developed by Kevin Tuohy in 1948, is made of hard or soft plastic.
It is held against the eye by the fluid that naturally covers the eye. A contact lens covers only the iris and the pupil.
Contact lenses can work better than eyeglasses in correcting some sight problems. However, many people prefer them for cosmetic reasons.
Converging lens
The name for a convex lens.
Convex lens
A lens that bulges at the centre. Convex lens are the most common kind of lenses, used in eyeglasses,

telescopes and microscopes. The human eye contains a convex lens. (See also: Cornea; Magnification; Real image.)
Convex mirror
A mirror that bulges out in the centre. Convex mirrors give a much wider angle of view than flat mirrors. They are used in car mirrors and in security mirrors in stores. They tend to make

objects look further away than they really are.
Cornea
The front part of the outer surface of the eye. It acts like a convex lens. The cornea is the place where light rays are bent and brought into the eye. It is a fixed lens. The part of the eye called the lens is an adjustable fine tuner for the light already gathered by the cornea. The lens is a double
convex lens.
Convex mirror – A convex mirror is a wide-angle mirror, enabling a wide angle of view. It is used as security mirrors and in some car wing mirrors. It makes objects look smaller and further away than they really are.
Convex lens – A convex lens produces a real image. It is a magnifying lens, used for magnifying glasses, camera lenses, projectors and so on. It is also the most common form of eyeglass, used for people who have difficulty focusing on objects close to them.
