  Pelean-type eruption
A violent explosive eruption dominated by pyroclastic flows. (See also: Glowing avalanche.) Mount St. Helens erupted in this way in 1980.

Pele’s hair
Thin strands of lava that cool as they fly through the air during an eruption of lava. (See also: Tephra.)
Pele’s tears
Small pieces of lava that are thrown clear of lava fountains and cool as they fly through the air
to make teardrop-shaped bombs. (See also: Tephra.)
Phenocryst
An especially large crystal embedded in smaller mineral grains or in igneous rock. Phenocrysts are common in granite.
Phreatic eruption
Steam-driven explosions that occur when water beneath the ground
is heated by magma. Basalt can superheat water to 1,170°C in
this way, producing an explosive outburst of steam, water, ash, blocks, and bombs.
Pillow lava
Pillow-shaped masses of lava that form under water.
