Water power

What is water power? Water power is using the energy in flowing water to make something work (including generating electricity).

A hydroelectric dam.

Water power is only successful if the flow of water can be kept reasonably steady throughout the year. In many cases the only way to do this is to build dams and store water in reservoirs. The water is then released steadily from the reservoir. This balances out the natural flow of the river which would rise after a storm and fall in a drought.
