What was Tenochtitlan? Tenochtitlan was the capital city of the ancient Aztec empire.

Tenochtitlan was an Aztec (Mexican) city-state founded on an island in Lake Texcoco, in the Valley of Mexico about 1325. It developed into the capital of the Aztec Empire in the 15th century, but was captured and destroyed by the Spanish in 1521.

Before the Spanish came it was the largest city in the Americas.
