Stone

What is a stone? A stone is a piece of rock.

A standing stone at Avebury.

The word stone is sometimes used as a general term for any hard natural material. Several kinds of rock have the word stone on the end. Sandstone is rock made from sand grains stuck together. Limestone is rock often made from the shells of sea creatures. The word stone is also used to describe objects made from hard natural materials. For example a stone axe. At one time people made many objects from stony materials. This time was known as the Stone Age.
