Snowman

What is a snowman? A snowman is a figure made out of snow.

A snowman in the Alps.

Snowmen are figures made out of snow and decorated with old hot, pieces of coal for buttons, and eyes, and perhaps a carrot for a nose. Making snowmen goes back to Medieval times, when snowmen began to be made in Northern Europe. Snowmen can only be made from loosely packed snow which is close to melting. Very dry powdery snow that is produced in very cold conditions will not work. The reason snow can be made into snowmen is because by compacting the snow, you put pressure on all of the tiny points in a snow crystal. These melt under pressure and then refreeze, sticking one crystal to another. This is what happens when you make a snowball, too.
