Sanctuary

What is a sanctuary? A sanctuary is an area in which religious buildings are placed. Also an area protected from civil law.

Drawing of a sanctuary at Olympia.

A sanctuary in Ancient Greek times was an area where fighting could not take place. It was an area surrounding temples that made up what the Greeks thought was the home of the gods, because temples were the homes of gods on Earth.

As a result of this, the sanctuaries were the places where competitions (games) were held. The most famous was at Olympia. The video shows the stadium at Olympia.
