Prophets

What are prophets? Prophets are religious people who foretell the future.

Micah the Moreshite prophet preaching to the Israelites.

In the Jewish faith, the second subdivision of the Hebrew Bible, Tanakh (Old Testament), is about the Hebrew prophets. In Deuteronomy 18:18, God said, "...and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him." In this way, a prophet can be thought of as the "mouth" of God.

Hebrew prophets often made their prophesies easier to understand by turning them into stories called parables.

Prophets in the Tanakh include Abraham, Moses, Miriam, Isaiah, Samuel, Ezekiel, Malachi, Job and Micah (pictured). The Talmud tells of of 48 male prophets and seven women prophets - Sarah, Miriam, Devorah, Hannah, Abigail, Huldah, and Esther.

The last prophets in the Hebrew Bible are Daniel, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi, who lived at the end of the 70-year Babylonian exile.

Some Christians believe that prophecy began again just before the life of Jesus. John the Baptist is thought of as a prophet who lived at the same time as Jesus.

Some Christian sects believe in the existence of a "modern-day" prophet., The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that God still speaks to mankind through prophecy. Latter-day Saints believe that Jesus Christ, under the direction of God the Father, leads the church by revealing His will to its president, who is therefore a modern-day prophet.

The Qur'an tells of a number of Prophets of Islam who were given special missions by God (Allah) to guide humanity. These special people include Muhammad, Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses) and Isa (Jesus).

The Qur'an says that God has sent a prophet to every group of people throughout time, and that Muhammad is the last of the prophets, sent for the whole of humankind. All prophets are prophets (from Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, to Muhammad). Muhammad is set apart from the other prophetic messengers and prophets because he was told by God to be the prophetic messenger to all of mankind.

Four prophets were sent holy books: the Tawrat (Torah) to Moses, the Zabur (Psalms) to David, the Injil (Gospel) to Jesus, and the Qur'an to Muhammad.
