Hard, hardness

What does hardness mean? A hard material is something that will not scratch easily. Many very hard materials are also brittle.

Diamond is the hardest substance. These are natural diamonds in a piece of rock.

The hardest things are crystals like diamond. These are also brittle. Some metals are quite hard. Steel is of medium hardness, about the same hardness as glass.
