What is a grape? A grape is the fruit produced by grape vines.

Grapes are the berries of the grape vine. Vines are climbing plants. They produce new shoots each spring, then flower and from the flowers, bunches of grapes develop. Grapes become ripe in late summer. Many are eaten raw, while others are crushed to make wine. Some are processed to make jam and the seeds crushed to make oil.

Grapes need a warm, wet spring, but a hot, dry summer, so they are limited in where they can be grown. If they are grown in places that have a cool climate, then they have to be grown agains a south-facing wall or on south-facing hills.

The most famous wine made from grapes is champagne.
