Glaze

What is a glaze? A glaze is a hard, transparent coating used to make pottery waterproof.

Before glaze.

After glaze.

A glaze is made from powdered glass in water. This is painted on to a piece of pottery. The pottery is then placed in a kiln and heated until the glass melts into a thin coating.

People also sue the term 'glaze' for making a shiny surface on cakes and pies. They do not use powdered glass, of course! Instead they either paint the surface with egg or some sugar in water.
