Food pyramid

What is a food pyramid? A food pyramid is a way of showing the proportions of different kinds of food that make up a healthy diet.

A balanced diet shown by a food pyramid.

A food pyramid is a way of showing what proportions of different foods we should eat to stay healthy.

It shows that we should eat more bread, potatoes and other carbohydrates than anything else. It shows that the next most common thing in our diets should be fruits and vegetables (hence the 5 a day slogan).

It then shows that meat and dairy products should be eaten in smaller amounts and that things with lots of sugar and salt in should be eaten sparingly (which is why they are at the top of the pyramid).
