Finger Lake

What is a finger lake? A finger lake is a deep, narrow mountain lake in a valley that was scoured out by a glacier.

Finger lakes in the Lake District, England.

A finger lake is called that because it is long and narrow - just like a finger. In Scotland, finer lakes are called lochs.

Finger lakes are almost all lakes made by glaciers in the last Ice Age. By looking to see where the finger lakes are, you can also find out where the glaciers used to be.

Finger lakes with one end drowned so that the sea can flood in are called sea-lochs or fjords.
