Corrie

What is a corrie? A corrie is a large hollow in a mountainside that was formed by the scouring action of a glacier.

Snowy mountains with the cirque clearly visible and labelled. The Scottish word for the same feature is corrie.

When landscape features occur in many countries, they often have their own names. That is what has happened with high mountain hollows. Mostly they are called cirques (the French name), but in Scotland they are corries (and in Wales cwms).

This video shows cwms (corries) on Snowdon.
