Conductor (electricity)

What is a conductor? A conductor is a material, such as a metal, that lets electricity flow through it.

Cables, such as these for connecting computers to the Internet, let electricity flow through to create connections.

All metals are conductors. Some conduct electricity better than others. The best metal conductor is gold. The most widely used metal conductor is copper. This is shown in the diagram above. It is an orangey red metal.

Carbon is not a metal but it is a good conductor. It is found inside many types of battery. Water is also a conductor, which is why you must not put wet hands near electricity supplies.

You may find that the word conductor is also used when talking about heat. Some materials are good conductors of heat. These materials are also mostly metals.
