Chlamys (Ancient Greek clothing)

What is a chlamy? A Chlamy is a cloak meant to be worn over a chiton in ancient times.

Ancient Romans, who copied the Greek clothing, wearing them at a dinner function.

The chiton was the basic garment people wore. It was a tunic. It was ideal in summer, but in the cool of an evening, or in winter, something a bit warmer was needed, which is why they developed cloaks – chlamys. Like the tunics, they were lightweight garments. When it was very cold the cloaks could be used to wrap up their wearer, and when it was a bit warmer, they could be thrown back over the shoulder.
