Caryatids

What are caryatids? Caryatids are sculptures of women (usually goddesses) that are also used as pillars to hold up roofs of temples.

A caryatid is a sculpted maiden used instead of a column in a temple. Caryatids means 'maidens of Karyai', which was an ancient town with a temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis and the maidens represented a dance with baskets on their heads.
