Bypass

What is a bypass? A bypass is a major road that carries traffic around a town.

A bypass near a large urban area.

A bypass is built to carry traffic around a town or city. Sometimes a bypass is called a ring road. It is usually designed to carry traffic quickly, so it is often built with many of the features of a motorway, such as junctions with flyovers.

People who live in places on main roads often ask for a bypass so that they can live more peacefully without through traffic.

Bypasses are usually very expensive to build and use up farmland.
