Barbarians

The name used by the Romans to talk about anyone outside the Roman Empire.

Celts, who lived in Britain, were considered barbarians by the Ancient Romans.

Today we tend to use 'barbarians' as a word meaning 'people who are not cultured', and who behave badly. In a way this comes form the Roman view of everyone who was not part of the Roman Empire. The Romans valued their culture and civilisation, and did not think much of those who did not have an orderly society and who lived outside the Roman Empire.
