Axis

What is an axis? An axis is an imaginary line which runs between the north and south poles of a planet, moon or star.

Axis.

The plural of axis is axes.

An axis is not something you can see, but an idea that there is a line between the poles around which a planet spins (see diagram).

Large objects like planets and stars spin about their axes. The Earth, for example, takes 24 hours to spin once on its axis. The Moon takes just over 27 days and the Sun takes 25 days.
