Atoll

What is Atoll? Atoll is an island that is the tip of a volcano and which usually has a surrounding coral reef.

An atoll in the Pacific Ocean.

Most islands in the deep oceans are the tips of volcanoes. Sometimes the volcanoes rise high above the ocean and sometimes their tips are close to sea level or even below it.

Corals often grow on the edges of these volcanoes and make coral reefs. If the reef reaches right into the shore, it is called a fringing reef. If there is clear water between the reef and the land, the area of water is called a lagoon.
