Apse

What is an apse? An apse is the semi-circular space behind the altar.

An apse in a small church.

In some churches there's a semicircular space behind the altar. This is called the apse.

Outside you will see it has a roof which looks like half a dome.

An apse was traditionally the place where the richest paintings or other decoration occurred.

In large churches and cathedrals the apse connects to the side aisles, making a passage behind the altar.
