Air raid

What is an air raid? An air raid is an attack on a place by aircraft that drop bombs.

Smoke rises from bombs dropped during an air raid in September 1940.

Air raids became common at the start of the Second World War. They were used by the Germans as part of their new kind of attack called Blitzkrieg. They first bombed British airports and then British cities. However, it was soon clear that, although a lot of destruction occurs, dropping bombs can never reduce a large city to rubble. For this reason, bombing has become less popular, being replaced by targeted missiles.
