Agora

What is an agora? Agora is the ancient Greek name for a marketplace (you will find the Romans used this word for their marketplaces, too).

A busy Roman agora, filled with traders and customers.

The Ancient Greeks developed the idea of the agora as a place for shopping. The Romans copied it, complete with the shops and colonnades around the edges. In many cases they fitted the agora into the forum, making a shopping and business centre.

The agora made sense because these civilisations were very developed and had lots of trade across their empires. As a result, there were many different kinds of goods to buy.
